Buddhism started in India about 2,500 years ago, with the enlightenment of Buddha. The Buddha is revered as a teacher and as an exemplar, not as God. Buddhism does not include the idea of a creator God.

The basic beliefs of Buddhism are:

  • nothing is permanent
  • actions have consequences
  • change is possible

Buddhism teaches practical methods of self-transformation. There are around 350 million Buddhists worldwide. All traditions are committed to non-violence and tolerance.
